When life gives you espresso, you should absolutely take the shot (with a little milk and cream probably)…
I worked at a cafe with the job duties including making food and drinks, customer service, and cleaning duties…to make the task list short and sweet. Some days were great and others I spilled water on technology and occasionally slice my finger, thankfully, when no one was looking. I frustrated a lot of people, made some smile and laugh, and to others I was just the tall girl behind the counter. But honestly, no matter the job you have, there will be moments and lessons you don’t expect.
When I started, I knew nothing. Like I didn’t know how to spell cappuccino let alone make one… however I would argue that being the worst can be the best (I’ll get to this later…). Each day came with a learning opportunity. This could look like learning how to make a new syrup or asking a regular customer how their past weekend was. Learning isn’t concrete and just because it isn’t in your job description does not mean you have to restrict your curious mind.
Yes I learned a lot about cutting bread (lol) and the history of coffee. But what was new each day was listening to customers and how they spend their day to day lives, becoming inspired by coworkers stories, and consistently being in an environment that was evolving. This has changed my perspective on all job experiences. Each job you apply for and either continue with or not, you learn so much about the community you live in and more importantly how YOU want to show up in the community.
I want to tie back to the idea that being the worst can actually be the best. Being surrounded by people with more advanced knowledge in an area that you don’t excel at means you have an opportunity of growth. I have so many memories of watching my coworkers be in their element and create their own version of magic. I was absolutely their biggest fan (whether they knew it or not.)
People are always observing and absorbing, so what do you want others to take away from being close to you? How awesome is it that in your field of work or wherever your passion may shine, chances are someone’s already impressed by you. Food for thought…. or should I say espresso for enlightenment (idk haha)
